Category E

Getting unstable and stable again just faster this time and self-supervision...oh my!

You are required to successfully complete the following before making your category E skydive

What to expect

This is the category where you begin to self supervise. During the last category you practiced getting unstable and then stable again following a stable exit but, during this category you will actually exit unstable. Be prepared for some non-poised exits and even some aerobatic maneuvers. All of your jumps during this category will occur from 11,000 feet.

Canopy skills will also be practiced and enhanced during this categories three jumps. You will continue to work finding the canopy's 'sweet spot' and enhance your landings. You should be practicing flaring the canopy just right so that it provided the maximum lift for your weight under it. This will make the canopy fly as flat and as long as possible before touching down. During category D you landed within 50m of your intended target with minimal assistance and this time you are expected to do it on your own.

Starting with category E you are expected to select your equipment and complete all of the pre-flight inspections and checks. While you will have instructor supervision now keep in mind that you will be doing this solo soon, so pay attention and learn good will save your life!

In order to advance to category F you must achieve several milestones. First, you must complete two successive disorienting maneuvers and get stable again within five (5) seconds. (If you complete this action and get the endorsement from your instructor you will be cleared for self-supervision). Second, you must, during the three jumps, complete a cumulation of one barrel roll, one back loop, one front loop, and make one self-supervised jump. You must also land your canopy within 50 meters of target unassisted.

Again, relax and have fun while learning and you will be successful

Freefall dive-flow

  • Assist with the spot
  • Solo non-gripped or optional exit
  • Altitude, arch, legs, relax
  • Perform required aerobatics until 6,000 feet
  • Altitude checks between each maneuver
  • Altitude, arch, legs, relax between each maneuver
  • Begin wave-off at 4,500 feet
  • Deploy by 4,000 feet

Canopy dive-flow

  • Correct routine opening problems with brakes set
  • Check altitude, position, and traffic
  • Attempt different flare techniques (as per instructor) and evaluate their effectiveness and feeling
  • Check altitude, position, and traffic between each maneuver
  • Return to normal controls by 2,000 feet and prepare to fly your landing pattern
  • Fly your landing pattern
  • At head-height above the ground, flare to 'sweet spot' as determined durning technique attempts
  • Continue to flare to maintain a flat glide until landing
  • Evaluate the flare and flare height based upon the landing results
