Packing Course

Learn to pack the parachute that you are's important

Why should I pack?

In order to jump a parachute must be packed. This means that it is folded and placed inside your harness/container. Many in the skydiving community do not know how to pack a their main or they do not feel comfortable doing so. We are hear to tell you that it isn't difficult and is nothing to fear. Packing can be time consuming at first and you will for sure sweat while doing it, we aren't going to lie! But, the benefits sure outweigh the costs.

Consider you are out at the drop zone and you want to make as many jumps as you can. When you are only limited by the speed you can pack you can do more than you could waiting on a packer. Packers cost money too, money you could be saving to make more jumps! Sure, we understand that you will want to take it easy sometimes and have someone pack for you but you should at least know how to do it. Packing your own is peace of mind. When someone else packs for you, you are relying on their eyes for gear inspections. Packing allows you to be more personal with your gear, know its condition, and detect wear. Not only during gear inspections does packing help. When you pack you become more familiar with the parachute's operation and that means that you can learn to pack better openings (something we all want). None of this is meant to deter you from using packers but rather to help you better understand and appreciate what your equipment does for you.

What will I learn?

During the packing course you will learn how to pack a square main using the P.R.O. method. You will learn about line groups, parachute components, methods, and good practices. You will be instructed on equipment inspection: wear, damage, and assembly. Before and during the packing phase you will learn how to recognize worn components and how to replace them; such as closing loops and packing stows. It is important to also visually inspect other components like the main deployment bag, bridle, and pilot chute; all of which you will learn. Your familiarity with your equipment will also be advanced as the instructor or rigger will walk you through the components of the parachute system and the FAA requirements for those components. You will watch and then practice packing a square main. During the course you can expect to pack five main parachutes, including the one you will be jumping.

All of this is in preparation for learning how to pack your own main parachute.
